| Samaritan Caregivers, established in 1996, is a non-profit 501(c) (3) organization and a member agency of the United Way of Howard County, IN. The mission of Samaritan Caregivers is to utilize volunteers to provide free non-medical help to residents of Howard County who are 50 and older, to maintain independent living. This help includes respite for family caregivers - staying with a home bound person so that their family member has some time away; friendly visiting - in person, by phone or as a pen-pal; transportation - for scheduled appointments; shopping & errands - assistance as needed; and home maintenance - simple repairs and lawn mowing. Skilled medical or personal care is not available from Samaritan Caregivers. Click here to check out our links page for additional resources for seniors. Samaritan Caregivers is able to offer no-cost services because of the dedication and enthusiasm of our volunteers. In 2009, 400 people volunteered at least once for Samaritan Caregivers, donating a total of 9610 hours of community service. This included 4830 hours of direct service to our friends; 2715 hours of receptionist work in the Samaritan Caregiver office; and 4780 hours to assist with administrative, marketing, fund raising and public relations. 259 people received assistance from Samaritan Caregivers at least once in 2009, and most were served on a regular basis, with the most services provided to single women, living alone at home, 85 years and older.
